THE IDEA

Today we came up with the idea that will serve as the basis for our film opening project. After researching and brainstorming we have decided that our genre will be a mixture of Mystery and Thriller/Suspense. Our idea is as follows: The film opens after an opening credit scene with a shot of a man waking up in what appears to be an old abandoned garage with blood dripping down his forehead. He wakes up with a raging headache and cannot figure out what happened before he got to this setting. The scene fuzzes out and a cutaway is used to reveal a shot of a man grabbing another man and injecting him with an unknown substance, the shot will most likely rely on low-key lighting, as we intend not to reveal the men's faces. As the scene returns to the original character, the camera pans around and in the darkened back corner of the room, the camera pulls in on a VHS tape that is on the ground. The man gets up and proceeds to walk out when he sees a girl dead on the floor. This opening will create a mysterious mood as well as allude to conflict and hint at the plot for the rest of the story.

While we still need a lot of planning, the idea give us a lot of room to work with. As the scene is intended to create mystery, Ben and I have already discussed how the rest of the film will play out and how the mysteries will be revealed. The protagonist tries to discern what happened to him before he arrived at the abandoned garage, but struggles to remember anything. He walks to a nearby small town and uses settle down for a while before he embarks on the rest of his journey. The man will go to the police station to try to figure out if anything has happened recently, and it is revealed that a serial killer and another accomplice have been targeting the area and 17 young girls and guys have been missing over the last 3 months. The man begins to have flashbacks throughout the movie of the injection scene from the opening, but the men's faces are never shown. As the movie continues, he recognizes it was himself being injected but does not know why. As the movie reaches its climax, in a flashback of the moment he was injected,  the man notices the VHS tape from the opening scene. The man runs to the abandoned garage place and searches for the tape. The tape has a message on the back that says play me, and he runs to the town to play the tape to the police, believing that the serial killer probably attempted to murder him. Watching the video, it is revealed to the audience that the man has been the serial killer the entire time, and the video is of the man killing the little girl who lay next to him when he awoke in the abandoned garage. The police arrest the man, and the camera slowly zooms out to see a man who was lurking behind the scenes throughout the entire movie. This man was shown earlier helping the protagonist throughout the film by aiding him in the direction of the police.  One final flashback reveals that this was the man who injected the serum into the protagonist which reveals to the audience that this character at the end is the accomplice who injected a memory serum into the protagonist in order to frame him and escape innocently.

I am really excited for our story, and believe it will make an awesome film opening. In the upcoming week, I will continue to work on planning and research and Ben and I plan to create a detailed storyboard which will map out the different shots and techniques we will utilize within our opening. I can't wait to share more information as we progress through different steps of the project.

Until next time,

Andrew
